ZMA

ZMA

I’ve been taking this for about three weeks now, and let me just tell you, this stuff is amazing.  I’m not even sure of all the sciency effects (maybe Q or Drew can fill us in on that), but what I do know is that I’ve never slept as well in my life as I do while taking this stuff.

It took a week or so to figure out the right time to take it (the directions are three pills, 30-60 minutes before bedtime).  At first I was taking it about an hour before I went to bed, and it was actually disrupting my sleep.  Now, for the past two weeks I’ve been taking it right before I go to sleep, and the effects are amazing – I sleep throughout the night and wake up feeling refreshed, not groggy at all.  This never happened before getting on ZMA.

Now this may sound weird, and maybe it’s just me, but one “side effect,” if you will, is that I have some very vivid and whacked out dreams on this.  Is anybody else taking this?  If so, does this happen to them or is it just me?  Not that it’s a bad thing…

Whisler,

I'm pretty intrigued by this ZMA thing, so I thought I'd go online and do my due dilligence and make sure it A) Won't kill me B) Can't be tested for at the AOCF games and C) Won't give me the same spike in head growth Barry Bonds mysteriously experienced in a 7 year period.

I'm very interested in any type of vitamins or natural supplements that will increase my energy throughout the day but most importantly, help me sleep better. You guys ever hear of that Mona-Vie stuff? I'm sure every admin at work has tried suckering you into one of their "tasting parties" or given you a free bottle of what looks like Amazonian wine. The stuff is great, but I'm not about to start hanging out with a bunch of people that enjoy getting caught up in pyramid schemes and letting others get rich off you peddling $40 bottles of berries to your neighbors.

Not sure if you saw this Whisler, but that ZMA stuff was created by a fella you may have heard of before (Sportscenter, CNN.com, California State Penetentary System Inmate #), former BALCO owner Victor Conte. If you've been experiencing major mood swings, a shrinkage of your manhood, or perhaps patches of hair on your back that would rival Sasquatch.

found this guy when I searched for ZMA, which sounds way too much like Zima..

I haven't read the whole thing yet, but the abstract doesn't seem to be praising this stuff all that much....

Ha, yes I did see that. I was a little skeptical at first because of that, but the only ingredients in the stuff are Zinc, Magnesium, and Vitamin B6. That's about the depth of my scientific knowledge, but I do know that those things probably wont kill you. Probably...Q can hopefully reassure me on this...

I also can't speak to whether it's made me a better athlete or gotten me stronger, the only effects I've seen so far is that I sleep much, much better. But hell, for all I know that could just by psychological.

I think Michael Jackson found some stuff that helped him sleep much, much better too.

I was skeptical about this supplement at first as well. Especially since the most in-depth study was funded by Conte and BALCO, but nevertheless, it has shown to be very effective for improving sleep and keeping one's body in an anabolic state. Good sleep is paramount for recovery. I plan on eventually writing a post regarding proper recovery on AOF.

And yes, I've heard about people having whacked out dreams on this. Hasn't happened to me yet...
